Together with the island of Nevis, Saint Kitts constitutes the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. St Kitts is situated at 17°15'N, 62°40'W, about 1,300 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, in the United States. It has a land area of about 68 sq. miles, being 18 by 5 miles.

Political Structure
The politics of Saint Kitts and Nevis takes place in the framework of an independent federal parliamentary democratic Commonwealth Realm with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state, represented in St. Kitts and Nevis by a governor-general. He acts on the advice of the prime minister, who is the majority party leader in the National Assembly, and who, with a cabinet, conducts affairs of state.
St. Kitts and Nevis have a single National Assembly responsible for making laws, and comprising 14 or 15 members depending upon circumstances. 11 of these are directly elected representatives whilst three are senators appointed by the governor-general. The prime minister is appointed from the representatives by the governor general, who has a constitutional duty to select someone who is likely to command the support of the majority of the representatives.

Infrastructure and Economy
For hundreds of years, St. Kitts operated as a sugar monoculture. But due to decreasing profitability, the government closed the industry in 2005. Tourism is a major and growing source of income to the island, although the number and density of resorts is less than on other Caribbean islands. Transportation, non-sugar agriculture, manufacturing and construction are the other growing sectors of the economy.
In addition to this, in hopes of expanding tourism, the country hosts its annual St. Kitts Music Festival.
